| Description: |
This recruitment seeks an environmental and/or public health scientist with formal education and experience in the field of toxicology.
This position serves as a health assessor for the Environmental Public Health Program within the Section of Epidemiology. The incumbent will evaluate the health significance of chemicals in the environment in Alaska, considering the chemical and physical nature of the chemicals, site conditions, toxicological properties, and relevant exposure pathways. The incumbent will evaluate contaminants in fish and other subsistence foods, perform health assessments for communities impacted by contaminated sites, conduct lead exposure surveillance, and respond to a variety of other environmental health concerns. This position provides a unique opportunity to improve the health status of Alaskans by reducing exposure to hazardous chemicals.
We are looking for candidates with the following Knowledge, Skills, Experience and Strengths:
• Demonstrated knowledge of environmental toxicology principles
• Experience evaluating the health impacts of environmental contaminants
• Demonstrated knowledge of the fate and transport of chemicals in the environment
• Experience communicating the results of scientific information to peers, both through oral presentations and publication in peer-reviewed scientific literature
• Ability to communicate complex information in a simplified manner that is understandable to the lay public
• Ability to communicate professionally, effectively and diplomatically while under pressure
• Knowledge of risk communication theory and practice
• Strong critical thinking skills
• Strong writing skills (both scientific and for lay public)
• Experience working effectively as a member of a team

The starting salary for this position is $4976 per month. |
| Qualifications: |
Minimum Qualifications:
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in public health, health administration, nursing, nutrition, epidemiology, health sciences, education, health education, community health, psychology, the social sciences, the biological sciences, the physical sciences, social work, computer sciences, biostatistics/statistics, or a closely related field.
AND
Five years of professional experience administering or providing specialized health care or public health services or programs. The required professional experience includes work such as a Registered Nurse, Public Health Nurse, Nurse Consultant, Health Program Specialist or Manager, Health and Social Services Planner, Nutritionist, Audiologist, Health Practitioner, Advanced Nurse Practitioner, Physicians Assistant, Public Health Representative, Health Program Associate, or other health professional with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere. Service as an Analyst/Programmer, Education Specialist, Research Analyst or other job classes may qualify if the work performed was specifically related to the development of health curriculum or the collection, analysis, and maintenance of data concerning conditions of public health importance, such as incidence or prevalence of disease or injuries, social risk factors, behavioral risk factors, environmental risk factors, and/or demographic characteristics. The required work experience may also include graduate level work conducting/assisting in specialized scientific research studies related to public health.
Substitution: A master's degree from an accredited college in one of the required fields will substitute for two years of the required work experience.
Note: Some positions require security clearance. The essential functions of some positions may involve exposure to infectious disease and/or biohazards. Some positions require eligibility for specific professional registration or licensure in the State of Alaska, e.g., as a Registered Nurse, Advanced Nurse Practitioner Registered Dietician, Certified Clinical Audiologist, Certified EMT III, or Paramedic.
