A new world of opportunity exists at Northrop Grumman. Northrop Grumman Information Technology (NGIT) sector is seeking a Spatial Statistician to join our team in defining the future. This position will be located in Atlanta, Georgia (USA).
The qualified applicant will become part of Northrop Grumman's Public Health Division working with The Centers for Disease Control (CDC). The CDC's Division for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention (DHDSP), National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP), CoCHP, provides public health leadership to improve cardiovascular health for all and reduce the burden and disparities associated with heart disease and stroke. This position will enable the DHDSP to conduct studies of the spatial and spatio-temporal trends in heart disease and stroke, thereby providing local, state and national health agencies and their partners with critical information for tailoring heart disease and stroke prevention programs and policies to the needs of individual communities. The position is located in the Epidemiology and Surveillance Branch, Small Area Analysis Team.
Roles and Responsibilities:
• Conduct analyses of the spatial and spatio-temporal patterns of heart disease and stroke mortality, morbidity and risk factors, by socio-demographic group, to document existing patterns and identify community level correlates and pathways.
• Provide support to team members by evaluating and recommending appropriate statistical tools and techniques to address the spatial and spatio-temporal patterns of heart disease and stroke mortality, morbidity and risk factors.
• Provide spatial statistics leadership and guidance in the development of a geo-referenced national surveillance system for heart disease and stroke. Present results of spatial statistics analyses at national/international scientific meetings
• In collaboration with Team members, write and publish study results in peer reviewed professional journals
• Assist in summarizing study results to be translated and disseminated to State and Local Health Departments, Division partners, public health agencies, health care organizations and the general public via CDC fact sheets (hard copy and on-line) and other communication tools.
• Represent the Division for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention by providing expert advice and consultation on spatial statistics at meetings and conferences with other components of CDC, Federal agencies, state public health officials, professional organizations, and others in the health systems research community who seek to utilize spatial statistics.
• Maintain detailed documentation of all project-related information and data analyses. Ensure and maintain data security of geo-coded datasets
• Compile and manage large datasets from diverse sources containing socio-economic, demographic, public health, and environmental data for individuals, hospitals, census tracts, and counties as well as output from analyses

Minimum Qualifications:
To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:
• Master’s degree in statistics, geography, epidemiology, or a related field.
• Experience and in-depth understanding of spatial statistics. Practical experience carrying out independent research in spatial statistics or small area analysis.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment as well as the ability to work independently when needed.
• Experience in writing scientific articles for peer-reviewed professional journals
• Excellent oral and writing communication skills.
• Extensive experience with SAS as well as knowledge of basic PC office tools such as Word, Excel, Powerpoint
• Experience with GeoDa, WinBugs, R, and Reference Manager, is highly desirable
Preferred Qualifications:
Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:
• Experience working within the public health arena.
• Some experience with ArcGIS mapping and analytical extensions is desirable but not required
• Knowledge of Bayesian disease mapping and hierarchical modeling is desirable |
