Description: El Paso County Department of Health and Environment (EPCDHE), based in Colorado Springs, Colorado, serves an estimated 595,000 residents of El Paso County. The County includes urban Colorado Springs and rural eastern El Paso County. EPCDHE provides a broad spectrum of services to address ongoing and critical public health and safety issues. In January 2009, the El Paso County Department of Health and Environment (EPCDHE) will be organized in three major divisions: Health Promotion, Disease Prevention and Control and Health Services. EPCDHE’s infrastructure includes the Office of Communications, Human Resources, and General Operations (Finance, Information Technology). The Health Department programs include both those mandated by state statute as well as those that reflect the unique needs of El Paso County. EPCDHE accomplishes this mission by focusing on the Ten Essential Public Health Services, which fall under three general categories: assessment, policy development and assurance.

Description: The Nurse Practitioner position performs physical assessments, diagnosis and treatment under protocol for clients. Refers clients and maintains client records in a clinical setting. OVERVIEW OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: •Obtain medical and psycho/social histories on clients. •Perform complete physical exams and individualized gynecological or reproductive exams on clients. •Orders, performs, and interprets selected laboratory and diagnostic tests as indicated by client history and physical exam. •Determines a plan of health care for clients based on data obtained through history, physical and laboratory review. •Identifies clients with existing or developing medical risk factors outside scope of practice for Family Planning or Wise for Life and initiates appropriate referrals or other area resources. •Counsels and educates clients on all aspects of reproductive health and health related issues. •Maintains accurate client records. •Responsible for follow-up on abnormal clinical and lab results. If client is a Wise for Life client, assists with follow-up on abnormal clinical and lab results as requested by RN case manager, dietitian or supervisor. •Participates with other Family Planning or Wise for Life staff members in planning, evaluating and delivering women’s health services. •Obtains records and analyzes demographic and statistical data to adapt services to client and community needs.

Qualifications: •Specific training or job experience required: -Bachelor’s degree in nursing -Valid Colorado Registered Nurse in good standing -Certified Nurse Practitioner -Two years clinical experience -Current CPR Certification •Knowledge, skills and abilities: -Ability to perform under stress and when confronted with persons acting under stress. -Skill in demonstrating a cooperative, professional attitude to cultivate relationships both within and outside the organization. -Skill in prioritizing and organizing multiple tasks and the ability to complete projects in a timely manner. Ability to respond in a flexible manner and reprioritize work as situations change. -Ability to demonstrate sound judgment by taking appropriate actions regarding questionable findings or concerns. Ability to identify problems and work creativity to resolve them, considering the impact of actions on the department. -Ability to maintain confidentiality -Knowledge and understanding of company policies and procedures. -Ability to write and maintain accurate records and reports to meet management objectives. -Ability to work independently and in a team environment. -Ability to maintain professional competencies.
