Description: Implements ANA goals through the research, synthesis, analysis, evaluation and development of briefing papers, reports and position papers regarding health policy and multiple areas of clinical practice and areas related to practice. Provides direction and support of volunteer groups such as the Congress on Nursing Practice and Economics, Committees or workgroups. Keeps informed of current significant trends, issues and strategies related to assigned or related policies, positions, issues and areas of expertise. Synthesizes and evaluates actions taken by organizational units and develops follow-up action plan that includes proposed staff assignments and due dates. Analyzes implications and drafts recommendations for the association, its constituents and the profession and disseminates health policy related information, both through written reports and through public speaking engagements, as a representative of ANA. Prepares and supervises preparation and development of policy and position statements, research, analysis and legislative testimony on nursing practice, health care issues, and related topics for publication, exhibits and other products. Directs selected research grants, contracts, or programs and communicates with funding agencies as appropriate. Advises and assists with ongoing and proposed research projects and grant proposals at the direction of the Director. Promotes association policies and goals through active service with external organizations as a representative of ANA. Writes and publishes materials in refereed journals, both in technical and non-technical publications, chapters, monographs and book reviews

Qualifications: Doctorate in nursing, economics, health policy, public health or behavioral science from a recognized institution is required. Requires ten or more years of demonstrated, high -level competence in more than one of the following areas of the profession, as well as significant experience in application to a broad variety of nursing issues. Profession activities including research, grant activity, publication, teaching, and/or service in areas relevant to the position as demonstrated by a substantial record in the applicable area(s).” Strong computer skills Demonstrated experience with database setup and manipulation using software such as ACCESS, SPSS, SAS required.association experience highly desirable. Prior work with nurses or nursing groups on professional nursing issues strongly preferred. Evidence of collaboration with other health care disciplines strongly preferred. Public speaking and other evidence of high-level skills required. Proficiency in working with individuals with various backgrounds and levels of sophistication on nursing practice and health policy issues required. Ability to manage and complete multiple, high-level complex projects simultaneously. Must be flexible and highly competent to serve as a consultant to ANA staff, elected and appointed officials and external groups. Ability to rapidly analyze and explain complex concepts in lay terms is essential. Must be able to formulate, evaluate and explain health policy. Ability to work effectively with staff at all levels and in all organizational units of the association is required. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Travel is required.
