| Description: |
The Family Involvement Coordinator in the Children with Special Health Care Needs (CSHCN) Program is a unique position to provide leadership for inclusion of the family perspective in policy and program development for children and youth with special health care needs and serve as a resource for promoting quality, culturally competent, family-centered, integrated systems of care. Improved systems of care for children with special health care needs are critical to the health of this segment of the population. Consumer input is required to develop worthwhile programs and policies. This position ensures that the family perspective is heard and is responsible for informing and educating both DOH and the public about what it is like to have a child with special health care needs. Doctors, nurses, legislators, educators, and agencies must hear the stories and perspectives of families who have children with special health care needs, whether it is autism, asthma, cancer, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, or a host of other disorders and disabilities. These families struggle in many ways, and they can be ignored by policy makers unless there are mechanisms in place to bring their stories forward and assist in the development of policies and programs that really make sense to the users - the families themselves.
The position is responsible for integrating family members into a number of projects, including two federal grants. "Epilepsia en Washington: Improving Access to Care for Children & Youth", a three year grant that began in 9/07, focuses on community-based services for the medically underserved Hispanic children with epilepsy/seizure disorders in central Washington. "Autism Awareness: Partnership for Change" is a new three year grant just awarded 9/08 to improve access to quality, comprehensive, coordinated, community-based systems of health care and related services for children and youth with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other developmental disabilities. This position plays a key role identifying and mentoring parents for the Autism Advisory Council, interfacing with autism parent support groups, and participating in autism awareness trainings. Both grants target vulnerable populations in Washington and include specific, critical work activities with parents, other family members, and youth with autism and epilepsy and their medical providers.
