Job Summary:
The mission of the Bureau of Immunization is to protect the health of all New Yorkers through the prevention and control of vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs). The Surveillance Unit of the Bureau is directly responsible for monitoring, reporting and investigating all reported suspect cases of VPDs, which at this time include: varicella, pertussis, measles, mumps, rubella, tetanus, diphtheria, polio, vaccine infection as well as invasive pneumococcal and invasive Hib disease in those under 5 years of age. The Unit is responsible for assuring the institution of control measures, as well as outbreak response including identifying contacts, vaccination and antibiotic prophylaxis. The recent introduction of new vaccines for children and adults has created the need for the design and implementation of new and creative surveillance systems to monitor the impact of these new vaccines, which may include rotavirus and human papillomavirus infections. Additional duties of the Unit include the monitoring of Vaccine Adverse Event Reports (VAERS) for New York City. The international nature of New York City, both its citizens and visitors creates challenges in identifying and controlling VPDs and recognition of imported infections.

-- Responsible for monitoring and evaluation of the quality of surveillance activities carried out by the Unit.
-- Guide the regular analysis of surveillance data, and for communicating the status of the Unit and the epidemiology of VPDs to superiors.

-- Explore research opportunities in existing data, as well as new research opportunities to enhance and expand VPD surveillance.
-- Supervise staff of 17, defining tasks and standards as well as evaluating performance, with direct supervision of 5 staff.
-- Responsible for surveillance portions of the CDC grant.
-- Participate in emergency preparedness related Immunization issues.
-- Develop a surveillance system to detect adverse events related to pandemic influenza vaccination.
